Withersin’s Damned Interview with:
Stephen Patrick
I am a writer enjoying my third
incarnation as a storyteller. As a child
I wrote to entertain myself and explore the worlds of my comics and action
figures. As a college student, I wrote
to explore the weird things around me and to learn more about the fantastic
places and people that I would meet in my imagination. Now I write to share those things with
others, sometimes to excite, other times to scare, but hopefully to always
entertain.

In your own words, define
Withersin.
Withersin
keeps alive the best traditions of horror in a world where the real world is
often scary enough and we have few true escapes from it.
If you were a sideshow act,
what would you be?
I’d
definitely be a clown. Funny to some, scary to others, constantly jumping from drama to
slapstick and everything in between.
Just as likely to hand a balloon to a child to make him smile as to take
a pie in the face to make his parents giggle.
Brave enough to make a fool o myself, but always knowing that I can take
the makeup off at the end of the day and go home.
What is your greatest
non-literary influence?
The news. It’s not flashy, but it’s always there,
marching onward and relentlessly recording the majesty and minutiae of human
existence.
Describe your most
irrational fear.
They’re
all rational. I just don’t always have
time to explain when I’m running away.
How about your
most guilty pleasure?
Smallville, formerly the X-Files. There’s something
about curling up with my wife in front of the television and watching weird,
off-beat and surprisingly entertaining television.
Name the most disturbing
nursery rhyme/fairy tale you can recall.
Rumplestiltskin. That’s all I have to say about that.
Do you eat meat?
When in
What were the skies like
when you were young?
Blue, full of thin wispy clouds that swirled into different
things as I watched. On blessed days, I see them swirling
again. On bad days, they’re just clouds.
On the worst days, I look up and see a ceiling.
Name your favorite garden
tool.
My shovel. It’s sharp enough to dig deep into whatever
project I’m doing and strong enough to carry whatever I find.
Name your least favorite
color, first job and worst job.
Yellow,
Grocery clerk for both
Favorite: Author,
Movie, Music Group, Song, and Quote.

a wise saying and your name will live forever”-Anonymous
If you were a loaf of bread
what kind would you be?
A dark and thick crusted loaf of all-grain Mediterranean
grain bread. A bit crusty, soft in the middle, full of
satisfying nutrients, and somehow good for you.
Weirdest news you have read
in your local newspaper:
“Nurse
leaves man to bleed to death in her windshield.” And I’ve heard someone is making a movie
about the incident.
Why horror?
Horror
is primal. It is basic. It is clean and simple and allows both reader
and writer to tap into the fundamental aspects of being human. People are always closest to those they’ve
suffered with, so hopefully I can reach my readers in that same way, by sharing
a scare or too or maybe something that’s just a tad bit unsettling.

Drowning in Darkness: Withersin’s new liquid horror marketing campaign is
hampered by dozens of rabid fans clamoring to drink the scary goodness straight
from the tap, leading to Federal regulations and warning to subscribers. The truck above was the first
vehicle in a 100 mile-long convoy as fans line up for a taste of the sweet and
sour nectar despite the gnawing feeling in their stomachs that something dark,
wicked and sinister is just around the corner.
