Withersin’s Damned Interview with:

David Steven Blair

Born in Phoenix, AZ; grew up in a small hick town called Grangeville in Idaho.  I have a wonderful, supportive family scattered throughout the western states.  Science was my first passion, acting my next, and then in 1993, at the age of 13, I saw a little Spielberg film called “Jurassic Park” that made me want to make movies for the rest of my life.  I attended college at the University of Idaho and majored in Theatre Arts.

List published works/accomplishments:

I have a few published short stories in a children’s magazine, two award-winning feature-length independent films, and earned Best Director for “Paper Dolls” at the Eerie Horror Film Festival.

In your own words, define Withersin.

Cool horror/sci-fi mag run by some genuinely cool people!  Good art work, too!

If you were a sideshow act, what would you be?

I would definitely be a song-and-dance, Vaudeville-type show.

What is your greatest non-literary influence?

Films and their makers.

Describe your most irrational fear.

I have an irrational fear of spiders.  Ever since “Arachnophobia” I just can’t get over it.  Spiders just look mean.

How about your most guilty pleasure?

“American Idol” and N’Sync.  They’re tied.

Name the most disturbing nursery rhyme/fairy tale you can recall.

I’d have to say “Hansel and Gretel.”  Come on, a cannibalistic witch living in an irresistibly delicious house designed to lure small children in so she can boil them up and eat them?  And the climax of the story—sure, the kids prevail and turn the tables on the old hag, but do it by shoving her into her own oven where she burns to death.  This is kids’ stuff?  “Ring Around the Rosie” is a close second, “Humpty Dumpty” a close third: it’s just so hopeless, he’s a broken egg, no one can save him, end of story…

Do you eat meat?

Yes.

What were the skies like when you were young?

Sunny.

Name your favorite garden tool.

Garden tool?  Well, the lawn mower isn’t really a garden tool, but it’s my favorite garden/lawn/greenery maintenance-type tool, I guess.  I like mowing…you get sunshine, fresh air, and the pleasure of a clean-looking yard.

Name your least favorite color, first job and worst job.

My least favorite color is chartreuse, my first job was dishwashing at a Mexican Restaurant, and my worst job was working for the Census Bureau or Starbucks.

Favorite:  Author, Movie, Music Group, Song, and Quote.

I don’t have a favorite author, but I have been reading a lot of Deepak Chopra books lately…I’ll give you my favorite book though: The Stand by Stephen King.  Favorite movie: three-way tie between The Lord of the Rings movies.  Favorite music group: three-way tie between Jimmy Eat World, Death Cab for Cutie, and Arcade Fire.  Favorite song:  Fall Down by Toad the Wet Sprocket.  Favorite quote (these days…) “If not now, when?”

If you were a loaf of bread what kind would you be?

Amish Friendship Banana Nut Bread.

Weirdest news you have read in your local newspaper:

I don’t think I ever read the local newspaper; the Idaho County Free Press only came out once a week, and I only ever picked it up when I needed to start a fire.

Why horror?

It’s fun!  Scaring people is fun!  Being scared is fun!
